Wiki

The term wiki comes form the Hawaiian WikiWiki, which means fast. This could be because Wiki is a quick way of setting up a website, as you don’t have to produce the content yourself, you get others to do the work for you. A wiki website is, in practice, a collaborative effort. It is one of the family of software systems for managing website content. In real terms, the content of a wiki is written, enhanced and modified by the internet users themselves. Any visitor can make changes on a wiki page. The best known is Wikipedia.

  • If you want to set up a website or blog that:
    • contains lots of entries, not just the home page that reads vertically with columns for the different sections,
    • and allows complete interactivity,
  • …then you need to set up a wiki. One example would be an online encyclopedia. To ensure that the information on the wiki is reliable, there are precautions you can take like restricting the right to modify the content to certain internet users, at the very least to those who register first and identify themselves. That said, if access to the wiki is too restricted, it loses its “collaborative” identity. Wikis also have real potential for companies. They are a great way to build up a capital of collective knowledge, highlight the areas of expertise of each employee and grow a real common culture from the base up. However, the few efforts to do this so far have encountered resistance on a number of fronts – all too often, knowledge means power, for people who are disinclined to share their know-how with their colleagues.
