Webzine

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

The term webzine is a contraction of web and magazine, meaning a magazine that doesn’t exist in print but is published online on the web. A webzine is made up of a number of articles. It might be published by professionals or volunteers. It is described as interactive when internet users can leave comments on the articles. The first premier webzine, “Cybersphere”, was started in 1995 but has since ceased to exist. There are a number of witty and funny webzines, including a whole rash of them started in 1997, webzines especially for internet fanatics, like webzine 42, which is aimed at geeks, and music webzines like ADN sound.

  • Webzines have tended to supersede “fanzines”, the paper magazines distributed to a highly select network of rock music or cartoon strip enthusiasts, for example. In practice, a webzine is just like any other blog or website, except that the quality of the graphics is closer to that of paper magazines. But setting up a webzine sounds much smarter and carries much more of a sense of tribal identity than starting yet another website.
