Social network

Updated : Wednesday 30 November 2011

These are web-based networks of internet users with common interests or issues. They make it easy for members of the same community to contact each other and exchange news, videos, photos and so on. Examples are MySpace, Viadeo, LinkedIn, Ziki, Facebook, Asmallworld, etc. Over half of all internet users are said to have visited a social networking site in 2009. Registering with these networks is usually free, though they charge for some of the services they offer.

  • A survey by Proskauer shows that 29% of major multinationals prohibit access to MySpace or Facebook. Employees spend an average of 2 hours each day on these networks, and the loss to business in terms of decreased productivity has been put at 375 million euros per day. Mind you, if companies allowed their employees more time for professional “grooming” at work — to interact over a coffee or just take a break — they would have less need to go looking online for people to relate to and communicate with. Human beings are social animals, after all.
