SPAM

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

Spam or junk is unwanted email sent to your inbox. Its sending is illicit and the aim is to advertise something. While it is very often product promotion, it can also take the form of an appeal for a charitable or political cause, or it might be out-and-out fraud or phishing. Advertising mailings or newsletters to which an internet user has subscribed, even unwittingly, are not considered as spam.

  • We’ve all had spam promising to increase the size of our penis. That one is typical of indiscriminate spamming, as women receive it as well as men. All internet users complain, but this sort of advertising still goes on. Someone, somewhere, must be taken in by it. As for me, since I gave up my Club Internet address and moved to MobileMe, I have stopped getting spam and my inbox is depressingly empty, which is hard for the ego. Good old spam. The word spam is, by extension, increasingly being used to mean any kind of unsolicited magazines or junk mail in paper form. It’s only a small step from there to using it to describe that boy or girl who just won’t leave you alone…
