Social networking site, though the acronym is not much used. These can also be professional networks primarily designed for people wanting to exchange work-related news, contacts and advice. Viadeo and LinkedIn are among the leaders in this field.

  • We still have a very long way to go in learning how to use these sites. A lot of them serve mainly to revive and keep alive an existing network of professional relationships. But, with perseverance, you can make contact with a prospect, find a really good consultant, hire the right person for a job, or even get yourself noticed by a firm of headhunters. This year I even won a new client through LinkedIn. Someone I used to know through work read a message I’d just sent out to my network announcing my new corporate crisis management website, and that set off the process that led to the deal. If you want a networking site to boost your business or career, you have to provide regular input. Send messages to your contacts that implicitly highlight your expertise, perhaps by publishing a booklet giving information and advice, a video of a conference speech you have given, or an interview with you.
