What does it mean ?
What do we think ?

Reader

Updated : Wednesday 25 August 2010

Contrary to what you might think, a reader isn’t someone hired to read you a bedtime story. This isn’t the nursery, after all, it’s the internet. In this virtual universe, a reader is a website that reads the RSS feeds you’ve signed up to, or rather shows you a page with the RSS feeds on your chosen websites and blogs. Readers are also known as “feed aggregators”. Every search engine like Safari, Yahoo or Google. has its reader: Google Reader is one of the most popular, along with Netvibes.

In practical terms, each morning you look at your reader for the latest posts on the websites you follow. Thanks to the reader, you no longer have to log on to all 150 of your favourite blogs to see the latest posts. The reader is also a good alternative to receiving RSS feeds directly in your mailbox.. The mailbox option, which allows you to receive new posts on your chosen sites by email, in fact has its disadvantages, not least of which is that if you follow lots of websites, your inbox will become overloaded. You also have to give your email address to the website whose RSS feeds you are downloading, thus increasing the risk of receiving Spam, hoaxes and so on. But a reader could be a good solution if you want an overview, at the time of your choice, of the new posts on your selected websites or blogs.

A new generation of readers has appeared, to help us manage the growing volume of RSS feeds. They work on the principle of making a selection from the feeds you follow. Sites like PostRank send you only the posts with the best ratings from other internet users. Vigilance is needed with this type of tool, though, or we will all end up reading the same posts, which would pose a real threat to internet biodiversity!
