Pirate

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

On the internet, a pirate is a person committing crimes or offences targeted at, or using, computers: in this context, the term piracy can be used either for hijacking, or for copyright infringement that uses computer technology.

  • Beware, though: as the purists will tell you, there is a difference between hackers and pirates. A hacker is, by definition, someone with computer expertise, while a pirate is not, and conversely, a pirate is by definition a lawbreaker, while a hacker isn’t necessarily. Leaving aside the debate over how you define a pirate, the fact remains that the risk of your website, inbox or bank account being pirated is high. ELLE magazine has some useful advice here: choose complex logins and passwords that are a mixture of letters and figures, upper and lower case, include unusual characters like?, #, ! etc., and above all, change your password twice a year. Don’t use the same password for all your accounts, websites and inboxes. And, if you want to find out your degree of exposure to being pirated, go to the lockdown.co.uk website and click on Password Recovery Speeds under Features. It tells you how long it would take a pirate to figure out your password.
