Emoticon

Updated : Tuesday 2 February 2010

An emoticon is more commonly known as a “smiley” a little yellow face that started out as a smile but has come to express a variety of emotions: sadness, anger, surprise and so on. The term is now also used for the combinations of typographical keyboard characters that represent a person’s face, mainly the eyes, nose and mouth. There’s the broad grin, XD, for example, or <3 (which represents a heart, thence “I like”).

  • Using these characters allows you to share your mood or state of mind with other internet users, in chatrooms (internet spaces where you can carry on conversations with other internauts either in real time or by leaving messages, such as MSN or Facebook). Emoticons soon found wider uses. They crop up in emails, comments on forums, and in blogs. To decipher the typographical variety you need to look at them from an angle of 90°, so don’t do this with a bad back.
